"The Willamette Valley, and Eola-Amity Hills AVA are large with many varied soils, aspects and hidden valleys to be explored. It is with this in mind that we seek sites and farmers to work with who share our interest in understanding what this wine-growing valley is possible of. As this was the first harvest from these young vines, we decided to make a field blend that captures all that we love about young fresh cool climate Cabernet Franc.
The beauty of the Eola Springs Vineyard is that its size provides an expansive range of soils, elevations, and aspects. This young field blend block of Cabernet Franc is grown on a northwest-facing slope on ancient marine sedimentary soils at the northern end of the site. The vines are planted at nearly twice the density of the old vine block, and to three clones of Cabernet Franc. Steiner, a California Heirloom selection, 214 & 327 selections from the Loire Valley.
Fruit was harvested on October 19th, after weathering several rain-storms that caused Pinot Noir to melt on the vine in mid-September. Hanging strong, we were able to reach full maturity of the fruit at 12% alcohol. The resulting wine is ripe, juicy, super fresh with bright red berry fruits and just a little sanguine, and absolutely delicious to drink.
Fermentation occurred 100% whole-cluster for 8 days and pressed off a little sweet to minimize over-extraction of stem tannins and capture the vibrant red fruits and spice. Fermentation and malo completed in neutral oak barrels and aged for nine months with minimal sulfur. Bottling occurred without fining or filtration."
