"Charlie and Emma never set out to start a winery.
Emma had run a successful pop-up restaurant in Mexico City for years before opening Cala restaurant in San Francisco with chef-partner Gabriela Camara.
Charlie's father made wine from their backyard vines but it wasn't until harvest of 2009 when Charlie landed a job at Starmont Winery that he really caught the wine bug under the tutelage of Michael Cruse.
Cruse had a major impact on how Charlie viewed wine, encouraged him to travel, and so, Charlie spent the next 10 years crisscrossing the equator to make wine year-round from New Zealand to Santa Cruz; Argentina to San Francisco; South Africa to Sonoma and gained an even greater appreciation for the craft.
When Cruse decided to start his own winery he hand-selected Charlie to be his righthand and as part of the deal Cruse "made" Charlie start his own LLC winery at the same time. Charlie somewhat reluctantly agreed and the rest was history.
Despite a wealth of knowledge, experience and industry "secrets" what separates Charlie and Emma's wines apart is simplicity. Single vineyards, farmed properly, native yeasts, no fining or filtration, a small amount of S02 when necessary and now screwing it up.
They have full faith in the vineyards they both source from and manage themselves. They allow each wine, year-after-year, to stand on its own and be unique to the site and vintage. These are wines to be shared with family and friends at the dinner table- not so much to be discuss but just to help carry the conversation and we love their wines for this reason.
And yes, they did name the winery after their dog but only because Charlie's mom's alternative was "Charlie's Wines" ;-)" - Vin2U
