"While working an inspiring vintage in South Africa, Corinne and Katie decided to make their own wine. But what to call it? “Birdhorse” emerged after a few beers while reflecting on a certain NPR news quiz - and it stuck. The name represents both our personalities and our winemaking philosophy. Adventurous and fun, yet believers in great science and winemaking fundamentals.
Birdhorse represents our vision for innovation in California winemaking: that new perspectives can succeed; that 80%+ of the market does not have to be dominated by just ~7 grapes from a handful of regions; and that sincere wine lovers are looking for challenging and new wine drinking experiences. We are driven by intellectual curiosity, transparency, science, and data, but most importantly a passion for delicious wines and sharing them with the wider drinking public.
The 2019 Borden Ranch Verdelho is a white wine to make you take white wine just a little more seriously. Textured and balanced, dense but bright, drink it on a beach somewhere. Oysters optional (mandatory).
We sourced these grapes from the Vista Luna Vineyard in the Borden Ranch AVA, featuring gravelly, Redding-clay-loam soils. Neutral barrel fermentation and aging, 13.5% ABV.
You'll taste heaps of minerality and golden, tropical fruit. The nose is sunny and bright like a warm summer morning, with lifted notes of lemon peel, caramelized pineapple, wet stone, and brioche. The palate is densely textured, with a chalky minerality and racy acidity." - sourced/edited from producer website
