While working an inspiring vintage in South Africa, Corinne and Katie decided to make their own wine. But what to call it? “Birdhorse” emerged after a few beers while reflecting on a certain NPR news quiz - and it stuck. The name represents both our personalities and our winemaking philosophy. Adventurous and fun, yet believers in great science and winemaking fundamentals.
Birdhorse represents our vision for innovation in California winemaking: that new perspectives can succeed; that 80%+ of the market does not have to be dominated by just ~7 grapes from a handful of regions; and that sincere wine lovers are looking for challenging and new wine drinking experiences. We are driven by intellectual curiosity, transparency, science, and data, but most importantly a passion for delicious wines and sharing them with the wider drinking public.
Regarding the 2019 Mendocino Carignan - the chillable red is having a moment right now, and we are all about it. Nuanced in its aromas and texture, this wine also has a light body and brightness that make it delightfully refreshing after ten minutes in the fridge.
This wine was lovingly hand-picked by a motley crew of our Birdhorse team and some hooligan friends. It was fermented with 25% whole cluster and pressed off to age in neutral oak barrels after 15 days. 12.0% ABV.
The nose evokes dense, ripe fruit with layers of fresh, dark, brambly berries. The palate, however, is lean and fresh, with slightly stemmy tannin and bright acidity, evoking red plums and cranberries. Pairs perfectly with a backyard barbecue. -Birdhorse Wines
