Sam Vinciullo is a one-man grower/producer, crafting wine primarily from his small, dry-farmed and own-rooted estate vineyard in the Margaret River region of Western Australia. His journey into wine first began in 2005, when after completing his studies in winemaking at the University of Adelaide, Sam left his home country of Australia to hone his craft in regions around the world. He notably was highly influenced by the time he spent working on the volcanic slopes of Italy's Mount Etna and his future endeavors would be shaped by the remarkable wines he experienced there. Upon returning to Australia in 2015, Sam started his own eponymous label and would go on to purchase a vineyard in 2017. Organic farming and low-intervention winemaking became the primary focus of Sam's new venture, and he ceased the use of all chemicals and herbicides immediately throughout his newly acquired estate.
This 2017 Warner Glenn Red/White is a remarkable example of Sam's willingness to embrace adventure in his life and in his wines. By creating a cohesive fusion of 55% Merlot and 45% Semillon, two grapes that are virtually never blended, Sam has shaped a unique wine that simultaneously expresses distinct characteristics of both red and white wine. It is crisp, lean, and refreshing like a white, and yet it expresses deeper red fruit and spicy herbal flavors like a red. This is one of the most interesting and avant-garde bottlings made in all of Australia, and is certain to provide both intrigue and delight to anyone lucky enough to taste it.
